Meaning

What wrong did I do to Brahma, who never swerves? O Lord of Thiruthani, hero whose feet hurled the mountain! He picked out for me alone and created a head that does not wear your lovely anklet-adorned feet, eyes that do not seek you, hands that do not worship and a tongue that does not sing!

Explanation

It seems to blame Brahma, but it is really harsh self-criticism. If head, eyes, hands and tongue do not serve the Lord, having them is useless: an idea from the Thevaram tradition.

From the Shiva Purana

Brahma's fifth head

Once Brahma had five heads. Proud of being the creator, his fifth head declared, 'Shiva and I are equal.' Then Bhairava arose from Shiva's wrath and plucked off that head. Humbled, Brahma bowed to Shiva. We too carry a fifth head of 'I alone'; it is what refuses to bow.

To reflect on

What did your head, eyes, hands and tongue serve today?
