You do not recite the holy name of Palani; you do not crown your head with the feet of those who recite it; you do not say 'Muruga'; you do not tirelessly give and shatter the poverty of the needy; you do not dance, sobbing again and again, as supreme bliss overwhelms you. Bhogar, one of the eighteen Siddhas, did penance on Palani hill. Tradition says that by Murugan's grace he fashioned the idol of Dandayudhapani from navapashanam, a blend of nine herbal and mineral substances. Devotees believe the offerings poured over that idol become medicine. Bhogar's samadhi is still inside the Palani temple. Devotees say the very name of Palani is a healing medicine.
