Meaning

What comes of holding the breath like a bellows, twisting and forcing the air, tormenting and punishing the body? Know the kernel called Shiva-yoga, and keep in your mind the teaching the six-faced guru gave; that is enough. See, liberation is in your hand!

Explanation

Breath control and bodily austerity are only tools, not the goal. Liberation is to establish in the mind the truth the guru gave. Arunagirinathar puts inner realisation above harsh practices.

From the Chandogya Upanishad

'You are That'

Uddalaka's son Shvetaketu returned proud after twelve years of Vedic study. His father asked, 'Have you learned that by which everything is known?' He had not. The father had him break open a banyan seed: nothing could be seen inside, yet from that subtle essence a great banyan grows. He had him dissolve salt in water: the salt could not be seen, yet it could be tasted everywhere. 'That subtle essence is the truth; You are That,' he said. A single word from the guru woke him more than years of study.
