Meaning

They say the body is like a water bubble; they say wealth does not last, it is like a flash of lightning while you look. But tell them, 'Give something to the hungry one who has come to ask,' and they get up and go somewhere else. How very fine is the wisdom of those who have no love for Kumaran of the spear!

விளக்கம்

நிலையாமை பற்றி அழகாகப் பேசுபவர்கள், கொடுக்கும் நேரம் வந்தால் நழுவுகிறார்கள். 'மிகவும் நன்று' என்பது கூர்மையான கேலி. உண்மையான ஞானம் செயலில் தெரியும்; அன்பும் கொடையும் இல்லாத ஞானம் வெற்றுச் சொல்.

Explanation

Those who speak beautifully about impermanence slip away when it is time to give. 'How very fine' is sharp irony. True wisdom shows in action; wisdom without love and giving is empty words.

From the Adi Shankara tradition

Bhaja Govindam

In Kashi, Adi Shankara saw an old pandit memorising rules of grammar. Though at the end of his life, he was lost in words without thinking of the Lord. Seeing this, Shankara sang 'Bhaja Govindam': 'Sing of Govinda, O fool! When death comes, the rules of grammar will not save you.' It pointed to the gap between speech and life.
