Meaning

The friend speaks to the heroine's mother: Lady! There is a mighty elephant named Maran. He chased down the elephant of desire, which follows us so closely it treads out our very tracks; he cut the noose that splits into two strands; with compassion welling in his eyes, he gores and topples even crests like conch-white peaks. Thinking of him, this girl pines. And see, the wide evening sky is darkening!

Explanation

Desire is strong as an elephant, and it follows us everywhere. Good and bad karma bind us like two ropes. To overcome them we need another, mightier elephant, and Kambar says the Alvar is that elephant.

Yet compassion wells in that mighty elephant's eyes. Strength and compassion together are the Alvar's special mark.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 10, Chapter 43

The Elephant Kuvalayapida

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. Kamsa invited Krishna and Balarama to Mathura and laid many plots to kill them. At the gate of the arena he stationed a huge, fierce elephant named Kuvalayapida and ordered its keeper: 'When they come, drive the elephant at them.'

When Krishna reached the gate, the keeper drove the elephant forward. It tried to seize Krishna with its trunk. Krishna slipped between its legs, caught its tail and pulled it about in play. Then he came round in front, brought it down to the ground and wrenched out one of its tusks.

With the tusk on his shoulder, Krishna entered the arena. Each person there saw him differently: the wrestlers as a thunderbolt, the women as the god of love, the cowherds as their kinsman, Kamsa as death itself. The one who overcame the mighty elephant stood there full of compassion too. This is how Kambar sees the Alvar who overcomes the elephant of desire.
