Valmiki Ramayana, Sundara KandaRama's Ring in the Ashoka Grove
From the Valmiki Ramayana. In the Ashoka grove in Lanka, Sita was held captive for months. Demon women surrounded and threatened her; Ravana came, menaced her and left. The nights were long. One day, thinking there was no longer any point in living, she thought to end her life with her own long braid.
Then, from up in the tree, a soft voice began telling Rama's story, from his birth in Ayodhya to his search for her in the forest. Sita looked up: a small vanara. Hanuman came down, bowed, and placed in her hand the ring Rama had sent as a token.
Seeing the ring, Sita rejoiced as if she had seen Rama himself, and pressed it to her eyes. Her sorrow had not ended, but hope was born. Like that ring, which made every sorrow bearable, the Alvar's magizh garland is this heroine's remedy.
