Meaning

O you who are wisdom itself, I worship you! You never once thought, 'I will defeat and subdue those who argue from other scriptures.' Standing on the path of the Veda, you made its lasting truth known. And without ever thinking of parting me from the soil of Kurugur, you have granted me liberation.

Explanation

Nammalvar did not sing to win arguments. He had no wish to defeat anyone. He experienced God and sang that experience, and that is what showed others the truth.

The last line is very beautiful: 'without ever thinking of parting me from Kurugur, you granted me liberation'. Liberation is not going somewhere far away from this world. That bliss is found right here, on the Alvar's own soil, close to him.

Thiruvaimozhi 10.9 ('Soozh visumbu ani mugil')

Vaikuntha Welcomes the Alvar

From the Thiruvaimozhi. In the closing part of the Thiruvaimozhi, Nammalvar describes his own journey to the Supreme abode. It reads like a vision.

'In the encircling sky the lovely clouds beat their drums. The oceans raised their hands of waves and danced. The seven worlds brought offerings. All along the way the gods scattered flowers and called out, 'Welcome!' At the gate of Vaikuntha the eternal ones came forward, saying, 'He is our treasure.' I reached the feet of the Lord who sits with Sri.'

Yet in the decads that follow, the Alvar melts, saying he cannot live a moment apart from God. In the last verse he ends: 'You have surrounded me, so that my longing is fulfilled.' Liberation is not far away; God stands close, surrounding us. That is what Kambar means when he says, 'You gave me liberation without parting me from Kurugur.'
