Meaning

He wiped away our faults; he wiped away great falsehoods; he wiped away the wrong teachings others speak; he wiped away the doubts that lingered; he wiped away the sorrow of birth that clung to us, and took us as his own, this Lord of the servants.

Explanation

The last line of this verse is very tender. The sea's waves wipe the shore and erase the footprints in the sand. The poet begs the sea: leave only the footprints where the Alvar's devotees have walked.

Why? Those footprints are the guide. Walking where the devotees walked is the safe path, and the dust of their feet is holy. The Alvar wiped away every evil; the goodness of his devotees must remain for ever.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 10, Chapter 47

Uddhava Longs for the Dust of the Gopis' Feet

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. After Krishna went to Mathura, he sent his friend Uddhava, a great sage, to Gokulam. 'Console the gopis and teach them wisdom,' he said.

Uddhava stayed in Gokulam for some months. He had come to teach the gopis Vedanta, but he was astonished by their love. Eating, sleeping and working, they thought only of Krishna. The state that sages reach through long penance they had reached naturally, through love.

Before leaving, Uddhava said: 'May I be born in this Vrindavan as a bush, a creeper or a herb, so that the dust of these gopis' feet may fall on me.' The great sage himself longed for the footprints of devotees. That is why Kambar begs the sea not to wipe away the devotees' footprints.
