Meaning

The Thiruvaimozhi is a fruit; the flower of the green kalpaka tree; the nectar born of the great ocean; a cow that yields meaning. I have gone mad for my Lord's garland of verse and want nothing else. Even if other poets find fault with me and pluck out my tongue, are they not still good people?

Explanation

This is a devotee's madness. He describes the Thiruvaimozhi with four images: a fruit (sweetness), a kalpaka flower (it grants what is asked), nectar (freedom from death) and a milking cow (it flows without end).

Other poets may complain, 'Why does he talk only about one book?' Kambar does not mind. Even if they pluck out his tongue, he says, they are good people. So firm is he in his love.

Vishnu Purana, Book 5, Chapter 30

The Parijata Tree Brought for Satyabhama

From the Vishnu Purana. After defeating Narakasura, Krishna went with Satyabhama to Indra's heaven. In Indra's garden stood the Parijata, a wish-granting kalpaka tree. Born at the churning of the Ocean of Milk, its flowers shone like gold and their fragrance spread everywhere.

Seeing it, Satyabhama said, 'This tree should be in our Dwaraka.' Krishna uprooted it and set it on Garuda. Indra, enraged, came with the army of the gods and fought, but could not overcome Krishna. In the end Indra yielded.

The Parijata was planted in Dwaraka. The Purana says its fragrance delighted people for miles around, and those who came near it remembered their past lives. The kalpaka that had been only in heaven came down to earth. That is why Kambar calls the Thiruvaimozhi 'the flower of the kalpaka tree': a treasure of heaven came to Tamil soil.
