Shiva Purana; Kanda Puranam (the burning of Kama)Kama Who Came on the Chariot of the South Wind
From the Puranas. The gods wished for a son to be born to Lord Shiva, to destroy the demon Taraka. But Shiva sat in deep meditation, while Parvati served him. The gods sent Kama, the god of love.
Kama came with the south wind as his chariot and the cuckoo as his banner, carrying his sugar-cane bow and flower arrows. As he came, spring bloomed through the forest and the breeze spread fragrance. He shot a flower arrow at Lord Shiva.
His meditation broken, Shiva opened his third eye, and in that instant Kama was reduced to ashes. He who came with the sweet breeze burned in fire. Later, at the plea of his wife Rati, he was given life again, but without a body. The idea that the breeze holds both sweetness and burning is in this story and in Kambar's verse.
