Meaning

He is the Lord of Kurugai, where bees with whirring wings sing and the petals of green-stemmed kuvalai flowers sway and murmur. This life runs round and round through whirling births, like a spinning top; he took it away, gave us awareness, and opened the door of liberation for us. Never, on any day, will we let him go.

Explanation

A top spins and spins but goes nowhere. The cycle of births is like that: birth, death, and birth again. Souls whirl in it, not knowing the way out.

The Alvar did three things: he stopped the whirling, gave awareness, and opened the door of liberation. So Kambar says, 'never will we let him go'. To let go of the one who saved us from the whirl would be to go back into it.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 5, Chapters 7-12

Bharata, Reborn Because of a Fawn

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. Bharata, son of Rishabhadeva, was a great king; this land is called Bharatam after him. In old age he gave up his kingdom and did penance on the bank of the river Gandaki.

One day a pregnant doe, leaping in fright at a lion's roar, dropped her fawn into the river. Bharata rescued it and raised it. Little by little his whole mind went to the fawn, and he forgot meditation and worship. Even at the moment of death he thought of the deer, and so in his next birth he was born a deer.

But by the merit of his past penance he remembered his former life. He lived quietly as a deer, and in the next birth was born as a brahmin, Jada Bharata. This time he was caught by no attachment; acting like a simpleton, thinking only of God, he was freed. Attachment can set a little top spinning. Kambar says the Alvar's grace stops the spinning itself.
