Meaning

As a plantain stem, peeled layer after layer, turns out to have nothing inside, so the slight poems of others, each time one unfolds them, turn to empty waste. But the divine poetry of King Sadagopan, which makes truth clear, is like a spring in fine sand on the earth: the more you dig, the more it flows.

Explanation

Two images for two kinds of poetry. A plantain stem looks large from outside, but peel it and there is nothing inside. A sand-spring cannot be seen from outside, but dig and the water keeps flowing.

This is the nature of the Thiruvaimozhi. At first reading it seems simple. The deeper you study, the more new meaning wells up. That is why, though many commentators wrote great commentaries on it, it is never exhausted.

Mahabharata, Bhishma Parva

Water from the Earth for Bhishma

From the Mahabharata. On the tenth day of the war, Bhishma fell pierced by arrows. His body did not touch the ground; the arrows themselves became his bed. His head hung down. 'I need a pillow,' he said. Many brought soft pillows; he refused them. Arjuna shot three arrows and made him a pillow of arrows, and Bhishma was pleased.

Then Bhishma said, 'I am thirsty.' Kings brought cool water in golden pots; he refused that too. 'Arjuna, you give me water.'

With a mantra, Arjuna shot an arrow into the earth at Bhishma's right side. From where it struck, pure, cool water like nectar gushed up as a spring and flowed into Bhishma's mouth. It is said that this was the Ganga herself, come to give water to her son. Nectar lies in depths no one can see; dig rightly and it wells up. Kambar says the Thiruvaimozhi is like that.
