Meaning

Wealth will flow; poverty will end; freed from the bonds of attachment, both kinds of karma will vanish; you will see true greatness. Come into the richness of Kurugur, ringed by fertile fields, where kayal fish leap and the red honeycombs hung on tall sugar-cane stalks break and their honey spreads over the land!

Explanation

This verse is an invitation: 'Come to Kurugur!' Coming there brings both outer and inner wealth. Poverty ending is the outer; karma vanishing is the inner.

Kurugur's richness is pictured with delight: fish leap, and honeycombs hung on the cane break by themselves so honey spreads over the fields. It is an image for the richness of the Alvar's grace.

Life of Adi Shankara (Shankara Vijayam)

Kanakadhara: The Rain of Golden Gooseberries

From the life of Adi Shankara. As a young brahmachari, Shankara one day stood at the door of a poor brahmin's house for alms. The woman of the house had not even a grain of rice to give. Searching the whole house, she found only one dried gooseberry. With shame and tears she placed it in his bowl.

Seeing her poverty, and the giving heart she kept even in it, Shankara was moved. Standing there, he sang twenty-one verses in praise of Sri: 'You who dwell on Vishnu's chest, turn the glance of your eyes on this poor house.'

Tradition says that when the hymn ended, golden gooseberries rained down on that house. The verses are known as the Kanakadhara Stotram. Poverty ended; but greater still was the woman's giving heart. When Kambar says 'wealth will flow and poverty will end', he means grace of this kind.
