Meaning

Do you need fine qualities? Do you need a good family line? Do you need the 'corpse' of that line's customs? Do you need the 'demon' of wealth? When you see those who know that all one needs is the cluster of great gems that are the verses of the Lord who wears the cool, fragrant magizh garland, go and fold your hands in worship before them.

Explanation

This is a revolutionary verse. In that age people were honoured for their family, wealth and customs. Kambar calls these a 'corpse' and a 'demon'. The one truly worth honouring is the person who knows that the Alvar's songs are enough.

This is a basic idea of Vaishnava tradition: a devotee of God is worthy of worship, whatever family they were born into. The Alvars themselves came from many communities.

Life of Ramanuja (guruparampara tradition)

The Shoulder of Pillai Uranga Villi Dasar

From Vaishnava tradition. At Uraiyur lived a wrestler named Dhanurdasa. He was so enchanted by the beautiful eyes of his wife Ponnachi that he would walk behind her in the sun holding a parasol over her, and the town mocked him.

Ramanuja called him and asked, 'If I show you eyes more beautiful than these, what will you give?' He took him to the Srirangam temple and showed him Ranganatha's lotus eyes. In that moment Dhanurdasa was changed, and with his wife he became Ramanuja's devotee.

Each day, going to bathe in the Kaveri, Ramanuja leaned on the shoulder of a brahmin disciple; returning after his bath, he leaned on Dhanurdasa's shoulder. Some disciples grumbled. Through a test Ramanuja showed them that Dhanurdasa had a humility and love lacking in those of high birth. Not family, but love, makes one pure. That is why Kambar asks, 'Do you need good qualities, a good family line?'

To reflect on

Have you honoured someone not for their family or wealth, but for their love?
