Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 1, Chapter 6Narada, Who Wanders Singing Without Rest
From the Srimad Bhagavatam. In an earlier birth Narada was the son of a serving woman. When some sages stayed in their village during the rainy season, the boy served them. Hearing them sing the stories of God, his heart turned to God.
After his mother died he went to the forest and meditated. For a moment the Lord's form flashed in his heart and vanished, and he was in anguish. Then a voice spoke: 'You will not see me again in this birth. But keep singing my name, and in the next birth you will be my servant.'
All his life he sang the Lord's name. In the next age he was born as Narada, son of Brahma. With his veena in hand, singing 'Narayana, Narayana' without rest, he wanders the three worlds. His tongue is always full of God's name. This is the state Kambar prays for: 'make my tongue calloused'.
