Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda'This Is My Daughter Sita': Janaka Gives Her Hand
From the Valmiki Ramayana. After Rama bent and broke Shiva's bow, Janaka invited Dasharatha to Mithila. Vasishtha and Vishwamitra recited the lineages of both families and arranged the marriage by Vedic rite.
On the wedding day Janaka brought Sita, adorned with jewels, and stood her before the sacred fire facing Rama. Then he said: 'Iyam Sita mama suta', this is my daughter Sita. She will walk the path of dharma with you. Accept her; may good come to you. Take her hand in yours. She will follow you always, like your own shadow.'
He poured holy water into Rama's hand. Flowers rained from the sky and the gods sounded their drums. It was a marriage set in order by elders learned in the arts and the Veda. This is the highest form of the union Kambar speaks of.
