Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 10, Chapter 25Krishna Holds Up Govardhana as an Umbrella
From the Srimad Bhagavatam. Every year the cowherds of Gokulam held a festival for Indra, god of rain. One year the boy Krishna said: 'It is this Govardhana hill that gives grass to our cows and water to us. Let us honour it instead.' And the cowherds did so.
Enraged, Indra sent great clouds. For seven days thunder, lightning and torrential rain lashed Gokulam. The fields were flooded, the cows trembled, and the people ran to Krishna.
Smiling, Krishna lifted Govardhana hill on the little finger of his left hand and held it up like an umbrella. Beneath it the cowherds, cows and calves stayed safe for seven days; not a drop fell on them. Indra realised his error and bowed. Like that guardian who protected his people and their fields, Kambar calls the Alvar 'the guarded field of Kurugai'.
