Meaning

The mother speaks: Darkness drinks everything in; my daughter's colour is fading; her eyes, like the myna's, shed tears; her very life is wearing away. The Alvar of Kurugai gathered and spoke a thousand verses so that the seven worlds might be saved. Is it right that those who should shine by his words only give her more and more longing, and then stand apart?

Explanation

The mother grieves to see her daughter's state: her colour changes, tears flow, her life grows faint. These are the signs of separation in old Tamil love poems.

The mother's complaint is that it is not right to stir up love and then stand apart. In the spiritual sense, the Alvar's songs awaken longing for God, and the devotee knows no peace until that longing is fulfilled.

Mahabharata, Adi Parva (the story of Shakuntala)

Shakuntala Denied in the Royal Court

From the Mahabharata. King Dushyanta, out hunting, saw Shakuntala, who had grown up in the hermitage of the sage Kanva. He fell in love and married her by the gandharva rite. 'Soon I will take you to the palace,' he said, and left. But he did not come back.

Shakuntala bore a son and named him Bharata. Years passed. At last she went to the royal court with her son. Dushyanta, afraid of what people would say, declared, 'I do not know you.' With tears and anger Shakuntala spoke of truth and dharma: 'Truth is the highest dharma. Do not hide the truth.'

Then a voice rang out from the sky: 'She speaks the truth. This is your son. Accept him.' Dushyanta rejoiced, saying, 'I waited so that the people would know,' and accepted them both. Our land is called Bharatam after that son, Bharata. The mother's complaint, that it is wrong to stir up love and then stand apart, echoes in this story too.
