Thirumurai Kanda Puranam (Umapathi Sivacharya)Nambiyandar Nambi and the Pollapillaiyar
From the Thirumurai Kanda Puranam. At Thirunaraiyur there was a temple of Ganesha known as Pollapillaiyar. One day the priest who performed the worship there had to travel. He told his little son Nambi, 'Today you must offer the food to Pillaiyar.'
Young Nambi lovingly cooked rice, set it before Pillaiyar and said, 'Please eat.' Pillaiyar did not move. 'When my father offers, You eat. Will You not eat when I offer?' the boy wept. He was ready to dash his head against the stone. At that moment Pillaiyar stretched out His hand, stopped him, and ate the food that was offered.
From that day Pillaiyar Himself became Nambi's guru and taught him every art. Later, when King Rajaraja Chola searched for the lost Thevaram hymns, it was this same Pillaiyar who revealed to Nambi that they lay in a room of the Chidambaram temple. Nambiyandar Nambi gathered them and gave them to us as the Thirumurai.
A child's innocent love made God Himself eat, and that love opened for him the way to boundless wisdom. In the same way Ganesha came to Avvaiyar as guru and showed her the path of grace.
