Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam (Paranjothi Munivar)The Stone Elephant That Ate Sugarcane
From the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam. Abhisheka Pandiyan ruled Madurai. One day Lord Sokkanathar Himself came through the streets of Madurai in the form of a siddha, a wandering wonder-worker. He made the old young and turned iron into gold. Crowds gathered around Him.
Hearing of it, the king invited Him to the palace. The siddha refused to come and stayed sitting in the temple. So the king came to the temple himself, held up a stalk of sugarcane and said, 'If you are truly a siddha, make this stone elephant eat this sugarcane.'
The siddha smiled and looked at the elephant carved of stone nearby. At once the stone elephant came alive, stretched out its trunk, took the sugarcane from the king's hand, and chewed and ate it. It even took the pearl necklace from the king's neck and swallowed it. When the king bowed in awe, the siddha blessed him and vanished, and the necklace was returned.
Even a stone elephant tasted the sweetness of sugarcane. If the Lord gives life to our minds too, which are often as unfeeling as stone, they too will taste the sweetness hidden in 'sugarcane ripe at every joint'.
