Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of ThirunavukkarasarTied to a Stone and Thrown into the Sea
From the Periya Puranam. Thirunavukkarasar, also called Appar, left the Jain faith and became a devotee of Shiva. Enraged, the Pallava king tormented him in many ways. He shut him in a lime kiln, gave him poisoned food and set a maddened elephant on him. Nothing shook him.
At last the king had him tied to a great stone and thrown into the middle of the sea. As he sank, Appar was not afraid. Taking the five syllables as his only support, he sang: 'He is the Vedic One whose companion is the Word, the Lord of light... the true companion is Namasivaya.'
By the power of those five syllables, the very stone meant to drown him floated like a raft. The waves gently carried him to shore. The place where he came ashore lies near Thiruppathiripuliyur, where the miracle is remembered to this day. Hearing of it, the king himself had a change of heart and became a devotee of Shiva.
Avvaiyar completes her Agaval with the precious meaning of the five syllables. It is those five syllables that turn even the stone that would drown us in the sea of births into a raft, and it is wise Vinayaka who set them firmly in her heart.
