Meaning

This is the land where my father and mother lived in gladness, where our forebears lived out a thousand years, where a thousand longings grew in their minds and ripened. Shall I not salute it, keep it in my heart, and bless it with my own mouth? This is the land where our mothers appeared and first babbled, where as girls they danced in the moonlight, where they raised their homes well and lifted their children high. And after they died, this is the land where the dust of their bodies came to rest. Shall I not worship it, saying Vande Mataram?

Explanation

The worship of the land is a salutation, but Bharathiyar builds it out of three generations of memory. The soil where father and mother lived, the thousand years of the forebears, the ground where the mothers danced as girls in the moonlight, are all named as one land. So praising the country here is not praising a border; it is praising memory and bodies together with the earth they belonged to.

The voice of the song is quiet. In the returning line, shall I not worship it, saying Vande Mataram, there is a bow and not a war cry, a request rather than a shout. And each section is closed by the thought of the dust of the body settling in that same land: the song ends on the calm note that living and dying both finish in one soil.

To reflect on

When we worship the land, are we worshipping a boundary stone, or the soil our grandparents walked on?
