Explanation

This couplet fixes an order among virtues. "Ondraaga nalladhu kollaamai" means that among goods non-killing is first. "Matradhan pinsaarap poyyaamai nandru" means after it, not lying is good. In the previous chapter Valluvar praised truth very highly, saying "among all we have truly seen, nothing is better than truth." Here he places non-killing first and not lying next. Is this a contradiction?

Commentators explain: the claim about the height of truth was made in the view of that chapter; here, with the view of the welfare of lives, he puts non-killing first. Moreover, since the main aim of truthfulness is to do good to other lives, there is no contradiction in non-killing, which protects life, coming before it. The very definition "truth is speaking words free of any harm" confirms it.

This order matches the order in Patanjali's yoga tradition: among the yamas, ahimsa is first, satya second, asteya third. It is noteworthy that Tamil ethics joins with this Indian order of virtues.

In practice this is a guide to deciding. In subtle cases where non-killing and truth conflict, the couplet tells us that the side that protects life has priority. It offers a hint toward resolving the difficulty we saw earlier in Kaushika's story.

A story

Sita's Counsel to Rama

The Aranya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana contains a subtle conversation. Rama, Sita and Lakshmana entered the Dandaka forest, saw the hermitages of the sages and stayed with them for some time. The sages complained to Rama about the suffering caused by rakshasas. Rama gave his word to destroy them.

After that Sita told Rama of her anxiety. Her words, tradition says, ran: "There are three evils that arise in men out of desire. One is speaking falsehood; the second is craving another's wife; the third is violence without enmity. You have the first two not at all; they will never come to you. But I will tell you my worry about the third."

Sita continued: "You have no enmity with the rakshasas of the Dandaka forest. They have done you no harm. Holding a bow in hand is good for valour, but shooting arrows without cause will bring suffering to the creatures that live in the forest. When weapon and forest are together, the mind is easily drawn to violence."

Rama listened lovingly to her words. "You say this for my good. What you said agrees with the texts. But I have given my word to the sages. Protecting them is my duty. I could give up you, Lakshmana, even my life, but I will not give up my word," he said. Here Rama's truthfulness stands high.

In this conversation non-killing and truthfulness are spoken in one scene. Sita's heart puts forward non-killing; Rama puts forward the truth of a promise. The structure of the couplet "Non-killing is the foremost good; after it comes not lying" echoes beautifully in this scene. The epic does not hide this subtle tension between two virtues.
