Explanation

This couplet presents a hope as the fruit of non-killing. Over the lifespan of one who takes up and lives by non-killing, uyirunnum kootru, Yama the devourer of lives, will not go. Kootru is Kootruvan, Yama. Sellaadhu means will not approach, will not exercise rule. That is, the life of such a person cannot be shortened.

Its meaning can be seen in two ways. The first is the direct meaning: one who follows the path of non-killing has long life. The second is deeper: one who has not harmed living beings has no fear of death; since his mind is at peace, death does not frighten him. Here sellaadhu can also mean that Death's dominion does not extend over him.

This idea appears in many places in our tradition. By experience we know that those who lived with love depart peacefully. We also see that those who harmed others suffer at the end from fear and guilt. The couplet points to this difference.

The image uyirunnum kootru, "death that eats lives", is also noteworthy. Yama is the eater of lives. To the one who eats lives, that is, who kills, Death is a close kin. For one who does not kill, he has no place. In this way Valluvar simply shows that the killer belongs on Yama's side and the non-killer on life's side.

A story

Gajendra and the Crocodile

The eighth book of the Bhagavata Purana tells the famed story of Gajendra Moksha. Near Mount Trikuta there was a lotus pond. There Gajendra, the leader of elephants, lived with his herd. He was of great strength. On a day of fierce heat he went with his herd to bathe in that pond.

When Gajendra entered the water, a crocodile seized his leg. Though the elephant pulled with all his strength, the crocodile did not let go. In water the crocodile has more strength. This struggle went on for a thousand years, the Purana says. The elephant's body and strength weakened. His herd and family abandoned him.

Gajendra realised he could not escape by his own strength. His mind sank, and remembered the devotion of his previous birth. Picking up a lotus flower and raising it toward the Lord, he cried, "O Primal Source! Save me!" That cry reached Vaikuntha.

Vishnu came swiftly on Garuda. With his discus he destroyed the crocodile and freed Gajendra. The Purana explains that the crocodile had been a gandharva named Huhu who turned into a crocodile by a curse, and that Gajendra in his previous life was a king named Indradyumna. Through this meeting both obtained release from their curses.

In this story Gajendra is a powerful animal who stood at the gate of destruction. But for him who sought the Lord, Death did not approach. The story gives an image of the idea in "Over the lifespan of one who keeps non-killing, Death the devourer of lives does not go." Death does not come near one who surrenders himself entirely to God and thinks harm to no life. Even in the depth of suffering he was protected.
