Explanation

This couplet defines nallaaru, the good path. Aaru means a way. Valluvar calls it the nerri that choozhum, "thinks of", not killing any life. Soozhdhal means to think, to examine, to hold in the mind. So the couplet shows non-killing not only as an act but as a way followed with thought in the mind.

The form of this couplet recalls the first couplet of the chapter on truth: "If you ask what is truth, it is speaking words free of any harm." There a definition of truth; here a definition of the good path. In both the word yaadhondrum appears: anything, however small. That is, non-killing applies to all lives with no exception.

Neri is a method, a way of life. Non-killing is not an act of one day but a path followed continuously. One who goes on that path pays attention to his food, habits, speech and thought. The word nallaaru beautifully pictures that journey of life.

Another subtlety: there are many paths, and to the question which is the good path Valluvar gives a clear measure. If a path stirs the thought of killing lives, it is not the good path; if it removes that thought, it is. This measure is general and can apply to any tradition and any decision.

A story

The Hermits Stop the Hunter King

The play Abhijnanasakuntalam of the great poet Kalidasa opens with a hunting scene. This scene is fashioned by Kalidasa's imagination, based on the Shakuntala tale of the Mahabharata. King Dushyanta, mounted on his chariot, was chasing a spotted deer. He fitted an arrow to the bow and took aim. The deer leapt and fled in fear. It ran toward the hermitage of the sage Kanva.

At that moment two hermits came forward and stopped the king's chariot. "O king, do not loose the arrow! This is a deer of the hermitage. The body of this deer is delicate, and your arrow is like fire. The two do not suit each other. Your weapon is meant to protect the afflicted, not to kill an innocent life," they said.

Dushyanta realised there was truth in their words. At once he lowered his bow and withdrew the arrow. "I will not shoot a deer belonging to the hermitage," he promised. The hermits were pleased and blessed him that he would have a son worthy of his valour and grace.

After that scene Dushyanta met Shakuntala. He saw the peace of the hermitage and the friendship among its creatures. The play shows that he, who had come seeking the hunt, was changed on seeing the beauty of compassion. Love and affection blossomed only where the bow of violence was lowered.

This scene shows the idea of the couplet, "The good path is the way that thinks of not killing anything." The king stopped for a moment, thought of non-killing and lowered his bow. That thought opened the good path for him.
