Explanation

This couplet shows the positive form of non-killing. Non-killing is not only avoiding harm but also acts that protect lives. The way is paguththundu, sharing one's own food with others. Thereby pallutir omputhal, the protection of many lives, takes place. This is "chief among all compiled by the learned", the first of the virtues compiled in the texts.

The word paguththundu shows a deep quality of our tradition: the view that sharing a meal is better than eating alone. In our homes there is the custom of keeping a portion for the crow and the cow before eating. When a guest comes, the household eats only after feeding him. This is the practical form of the principle of the pancha maha yajna set out in the texts, in which bhuta yajna means feeding other beings.

The word palluyir does not mean only human beings. Animals, birds, ants and all lives are included. Non-killing protects life negatively; sharing food nurtures life positively. When both join, virtue becomes complete.

The meaning in daily life is very practical. Not wasting food, sharing with the hungry, and showing kindness to voiceless creatures are all expressions of the couplet. If one meal is shared with others it relieves the hunger of two lives, and virtue quietly takes place.

A story

Valliammai's Feeding Shed

This is an imagined story, following the qualities of simple village life in Tamil Nadu. It is the custom that during Thaipusam, along the road of devotees walking on pilgrimage to the Murugan temple at Tiruchendur, many villages set up water sheds and free-meal sheds. In one small village, by the roadside, a widow named Valliammai had set up a small shed at the door of her own house.

Valliammai had no great wealth. She raised her son by wage labour. But every year in the Thaipusam pilgrimage season, she bought a little rice from her savings and cooked gruel in a large pot. She kept buttermilk and water. She gave to every pilgrim who came, without asking what caste he was or from what village.

Every morning before eating she placed a handful of rice in the yard for the crow and a morsel in the street for the stray dog. She gave the first mouthful to the household cow before she herself ate. When her son was a little boy and saw this, he asked, "Mother, we ourselves do not have enough. Why give to everyone?" Valliammai laughed. "My child, when you share food it does not lessen; the heart fills. Every mouthful we eat comes from the labour of some life," she said.

One year was a time of severe summer heat. Many pilgrims came exhausted with fatigue and thirst. In Valliammai's shed they revived with shade, gruel and buttermilk. One blessed her: "Mother, you have saved many lives."

Some years later her son became a teacher. In his class he shared his food with children who came hungry. His mother's habit extended to the next generation. The truth of "Sharing one's food and protecting many lives is chief among the virtues the learned compiled" shows fully in the life of this simple family.
