Explanation

Many have embraced the path of renunciation. Some renounce out of fear of the suffering of worldly existence, nilai anji neethaar. Valluvar answers who is chief among them: the one who, fearing killing, thinks of and practises non-killing. He is the thalai, the first, among renunciates.

For nilai commentators give two meanings. Some say it is the state of birth, the cycle of being born again and again. Others say it is the state of household life, the family's responsibilities and the duties of work. In either case renunciation came out of fear. But among them, says Valluvar, the highest is the one who fears killing.

There is a subtle idea here. Fear of birth's suffering is a fear concerned with oneself. Fear of killing is a fear born of compassion for other lives. So renunciation driven by grace is better than that driven by self-concern. It renounces not for itself alone but for the world.

Though the couplet seems to speak of ascetics, it gives a message to householders too. An ascetic is known not by saffron robes but by grace. Whatever our station, if we have a mind that fears killing, to that degree we share in that height. The life of renunciation can live in household life as well.

A story

Shankara and the Cobra Shading the Frog

Biographies of the Advaita teacher Adi Shankara describe an incident. This is a traditional tale found in Shankara's life-stories; small details may vary from text to text. It is said that Shankara, who took up renunciation in youth and sought to establish monasteries in the four directions of India, came to the bank of the river Tungabhadra in the south.

As he walked with his disciples he saw a scene. In the fierce sun a frog, ready to lay eggs, was suffering. Nearby, a large cobra had spread its hood and was giving shade to the frog. A cobra is normally the enemy that eats frogs. But here it stood protecting the mother frog.

Shankara was deeply moved by this sight. He felt that a place where even natural enmities disappear is a holy place. According to tradition, he founded the Sringeri monastery at that very spot. It stands there on the bank of the Tungabhadra to this day, and is honoured as one of the four seats established by Adi Shankara.

The story beautifully shows the state of mind a renunciate reaches on seeing non-killing. Shankara followed the path of knowledge, but that scene itself taught that knowledge without compassion for life is incomplete. The place he chose is where the natural form of non-killing appeared.

The height of the couplet "Among those who renounced out of fear, the chief is the one who, fearing killing, thinks of non-killing" shows here. The best is one who is not just a renunciate but one who fears killing and thinks of non-killing. Shankara's mind was stirred by the sight of the cobra protecting the frog, and he took that place as fit for his spiritual work.
