Explanation

This verse states a social truth simply: not everyone who has wealth is clear in understanding, and not everyone clear in understanding is wealthy. The opening, 'iruvaeru ulakaththu iyarkai', brings forward this difference. 'Thiruvaeru' means wealth is one thing, and 'thelliyar aathalum vaeru' means becoming clear in mind is another. The meaning in terms of fate is that each comes by a separate destiny.

The reason this verse stands in the chapter on fate is to say that wealth and wisdom do not come by the same road. Some who have great fortune lack clarity. Others reach deep clarity even in a simple life. Understanding this, we see that it is wrong to treat the wealthy as always wise, or to look down on the wise because they are not rich.

Commentators give some different readings. Some take 'thiru' as wealth, and others as the prosperity that is the fruit of good deeds. 'Thelliyar' is taken as those of clear understanding, and by some as those with the clarity of renunciation. In each case the idea is that wealth and clarity are different things.

In life today this is a very useful clarity. In our society the advice of the wealthy is sometimes taken as important in every matter, and the wisdom of the poor is ignored. The verse reminds us that this is wrong. What we need is the habit of seeing what each person is strong in. A neighbour who has little money may know a great deal about patience, and a rich relative may know little about contentment. The wise listener learns from both.

A story

Kubera's Feast and Ganesha

In the Puranas, Kubera is the lord of wealth. He is the king of Alakapuri and master of the nine treasures, tradition says. He was very proud of his riches. Once he went to Kailasa wishing to invite Lord Shiva to a feast at his palace. In truth his aim was to show Shiva the splendour of his wealth. Shiva sensed this.

Shiva said with a smile, 'I cannot come. My son Ganesha will come to your feast.' Kubera arranged a grand feast for the boy Ganesha. Countless dishes, vessels brimming with food and servants were ready.

Ganesha sat down at the feast. He ate vessel after vessel. Then he ate the palace's stores of food. In the end, even after eating everything, his hunger was not appeased. 'I want more,' he said. Kubera was stunned. All his wealth began to shrink. Frightened, he ran to Kailasa, fell at Shiva's feet and begged to be saved, the story says.

One version of the tale says that Goddess Parvati lovingly gave Ganesha a handful of simple flattened rice, and when he ate it he was wholly satisfied. A small portion given with simple love gave a fullness that great wealth could not give.

Kubera understood his error. He learned that wealth is a thing for humility, not for pride. Though he possessed great riches, it was only then that clarity about what true satisfaction in hospitality is was born in him.

In this tale the idea of the verse, that wealth is one thing and clear wisdom another, shows plainly. Kubera had abundant wealth, but not the clarity about wealth's limits. The one who taught it was the Lord in the form of a boy.

This incident of Ganesha's feast is still one of the sweet stories told to children at the festival of Ganesha Chaturthi.
