Explanation

The two parts of this verse give meaning only when taken together. 'Nallavai ellaam theeyavaam, theeyavum nallavaam' speaks of good things turning bad and bad things turning good. When? 'Selvam seyarku', at the time of fate's making or unmaking of wealth. Commentators understand this last phrase in different ways. Some read it as: when the fate that increases wealth arrives, even bad things become good, and when it leaves, even good things become bad, in one flow. That reading is accepted here.

In a season when fate is favourable, an event that seemed a failure ends up as a great opportunity. The loss of a job opens the way to a new enterprise, and a journey that went astray brings a new friendship. When fate changes, the opposite happens: good done is repaid with blame, and help given is answered with betrayal. It is not only the outer events that change, but the way we read them.

The lesson is that we should not judge the final worth of an event by its immediate appearance. What tastes bitter today may taste sweet tomorrow. There is also a warning that even good things may carry seeds of destruction.

In today's life this verse is a comfort to someone standing in the middle of a great disappointment and a caution to someone standing at the top of a great success. In both states it teaches us not to decide in haste but to be patient until time has shown the whole. Keep the story open a little longer than the first reaction wishes.

A story

Urvashi's Curse and Brihannala

A story of Arjuna appears in the Vana Parva and the Virata Parva of the Mahabharata. During the forest exile Arjuna went to the world of the gods to obtain divine weapons and stayed in Indra's palace. There he also trained in music, dance and the arts. Indra made the gandharva Chitrasena his teacher.

One day the celestial dancer Urvashi told Arjuna of her desire. Arjuna said he respected her as a mother and humbly declined. Tradition says he considered her to stand in a mother's place because her lineage went back to his own ancestor Pururavas. Urvashi grew angry and cursed him: 'For one year you will be unmanly.'

Arjuna was deeply distressed by the curse. But Indra comforted him: 'This will end in good. You can take this as a year during your period of hidden life.' So the curse was modified to take effect for just one year.

When the twelve years in the forest were over, the thirteenth year came, in which the Pandavas had to live unrecognised. Hiding themselves was a great difficulty for them. Arjuna used the curse. In the palace of the Virata kingdom he joined as Brihannala, teacher of dance and music to Princess Uttara.

Throughout that year nobody recognised him. The dance and music he had learned in the heavenly world served him greatly. The curse that once seemed a punishment became a cloak that protected them from their enemies' eyes. When the year ended, the curse also ended and Arjuna regained his form.

This tale is a lovely example of 'even the bad turns good'. When fate turns favourable, even a curse becomes a boon. What helped Arjuna was that he accepted his suffering and waited patiently.

At the end of that year in Virata, the chance for heroic action against the enemy also came to him.

To reflect on

Think of something that first felt like a setback. Did it later turn out to be a door, and what did waiting teach you?
