Explanation

The first verse of the chapter on Hearing lifts the wealth of the ear above all other wealth. The world counts gold, land and cattle as great. But all of these can perish. Knowledge gained by hearing does not perish; it goes with a person everywhere. So Valluvar praises it as wealth among wealths, the wealth of all wealth.

The doubled phrase 'selvaththut selvam' gives strong emphasis, and 'achchelvam selvaththulellaam thalai' repeats it. To say one thing twice in a single verse shows Valluvar's firm belief. The wealth that comes by the ear is not seen by the eye, yet it gives many times the benefit that other wealth gives.

Here 'sevi' means the ear and also the quality of hearing. Some have ears and do not listen; some hear and do not think. This verse calls true hearing the wealth. In ancient times, since the Veda and the books of conduct spread by word of mouth, a person's wealth was the knowledge he had heard and learned. So the word 'sevichchelvam' carried deep meaning in that age.

Some commentators call this the wealth of hearing and say that it cannot be stolen by others and does not lessen when shared. Others say that the other kinds of wealth are impermanent and this one alone is lasting.

In the world today money and rank are counted as marks of wealth. But the knowledge gained by listening to a good teacher's word, an elder's experience or a good book's recording is a greater wealth than those. Setting aside a little time each day to hear good things will make us rich in knowledge.

A story

Prahlada Who Heard in the Womb

The seventh canto of the Bhagavata Purana tells the story of Prahlada. The asura king Hiranyakashipu had gone to perform austerity to win a boon from Brahma. At that time the gods attacked the city of the asuras. Indra took captive Hiranyakashipu's pregnant wife Kayadhu.

On the way the sage Narada stopped Indra. 'A great devotee is growing in her womb. Let her go,' he said. Indra released her. Narada kept Kayadhu in his hermitage, where she stayed safe until Hiranyakashipu returned.

In those days Narada taught Kayadhu about wisdom and devotion. Tired and sleepy, Kayadhu listened only at times, but the child in her womb heard every word with full attention. From the womb itself he learned the truths about the Lord. After birth he was called Prahlada.

When Prahlada grew up, his father Hiranyakashipu declared himself god and commanded that all worship him. But the boy worshipped Vishnu alone. In the gurukula the teachers recited lessons that praised his father, and Prahlada did not accept them. 'The truth I received in the womb is the lasting truth,' he said.

In anger Hiranyakashipu had him thrown under an elephant, hurled from a mountain, and fed poison. But nothing destroyed him. The wealth of the ear in Prahlada's mind destroyed fear. In the end Vishnu appeared in the form of Narasimha and destroyed Hiranyakashipu.

The few days of teaching that Prahlada heard stood by him all his life. All riches were with Hiranyakashipu, but the wealth of hearing in Prahlada proved greater than them.
