Explanation

This verse prescribes three examinations for employment: examining the doer, examining the work, and understanding the time. Only when these three fit together does the work flourish. To look at one and neglect the others is a mistake.

'Seyvaanai naadi' is examining the worker's ability, character and experience. 'Vinai naadi' is examining the nature, size, difficulty and result of the work. One task may call for fine attention, another for strength. Only when both are known can a suitable pairing arise.

'Kaalaththodu eydha unarndhu' is knowing the right moment to begin the work. If the time is missed, even the right person and the right task are of no use. The truth stated in the chapter on knowing the time returns here. When the triangle of person, work and time fits, success is sure.

A leader needs the habit of seeing these three together. Many look only at the person's ability; some look only at the work's importance. But they forget time. Valluvar lines up all three.

The last word 'seyal' asks us to entrust without hesitation once the examination is over. Examination is a road to action, not an excuse for delaying it. After examining as much as needed, one must act.

In today's project management too, people, tasks and schedule are the basic elements. Valluvar has compressed this in a single verse.

A story

Bhima Who Overcame Jarasandha

From the Mahabharata (Sabha Parva): Yudhishthira wished to perform the Rajasuya sacrifice. But Jarasandha, king of Magadha, had imprisoned countless kings. Without defeating him, the sacrifice could not be completed. Jarasandha was extremely strong, and no one could defeat him in wrestling. Earlier even Krishna could not defeat him and left Mathura for Dwaraka.

Krishna examined. Who was fit to defeat Jarasandha? Arjuna was an archer, but the equal of Jarasandha in wrestling was Bhima. He examined the work: Krishna knew the secret that Jarasandha had the boon that even if his body was split in two, it would join again. So the task required not strength alone but also subtle knowledge.

Next, the time. Jarasandha was waiting until the prisoners numbered a hundred kings, and the time of his own sacrifice was near. If delayed, the imprisoned kings might be sacrificed. So Krishna acted immediately. He, Bhima and Arjuna went to Magadha disguised as brahmins.

They approached Jarasandha and challenged, "You love wrestling; fight one of us." Jarasandha chose Bhima. For thirteen days and nights a fierce wrestling went on. On the fourteenth day, when Jarasandha tired, Krishna split a twig and threw the halves in opposite directions as a sign. Bhima understood, tore Jarasandha in two and threw the halves in opposite directions.

Thus by matching the right person (Bhima), the right task (winning the wrestling) and the right time (when the prisoners could still be saved), Krishna accomplished the work. The imprisoned kings were freed and the way to the Rajasuya was opened.

The subtlety of examination is clear in this tale. Krishna, knowing the secret of the task, chose Bhima as the doer, and also sensed the time.

To reflect on

For your next important task, have you checked all three: who will do it, what exactly it demands, and when it should begin?
