Explanation

Valluvar here names the first qualification for employment. The person appointed to work must have the power to discern what is good and what is evil; moreover, after knowing, he must be inclined by nature to choose the good. If there is knowledge but the will leans to evil, it is of no use.

'Nanmaiyum theemaiyum naadi' points to the habit of thinking deeply about which act will bring good to the country and people and which will bring harm. One who thinks ahead about results before beginning an act will reduce his errors. One who acts in haste may take a decision mixed of good and evil.

In 'nalam purinda thanmaiyaan' the word 'thanmai' is important. It denotes not a single decision but his natural habit of loving the good. One who pretends to be good for some days differs from one who naturally chooses the good. The second kind should be placed in office.

The reason for such choice is clear. A worker takes decisions alone in many places, where the leader cannot be present. Then his good intent protects the country. Law and supervision cannot reach everywhere; the inner inclination towards good is the final guard.

Today's organisations look for honesty along with talent when choosing staff. That is an extension of this verse. A knowledgeable person with good intent is the best worker.

So the verse teaches that the first step of employment is to choose first the person in whom discernment and goodwill are joined.

A story

Vidura the Counsellor of Good

From the Mahabharata (Adi Parva, Udyoga Parva): Vidura was minister of Hastinapura. Son of Vyasa, he is praised in the epic as an aspect of Dharma. He was not born in the royal family, but his wisdom and honesty earned him the ministry. He had the nature of knowing good from evil and speaking only the good.

When Duryodhana tried to harm the Pandavas, Vidura did not hesitate to warn King Dhritarashtra. When a plan existed to burn the Pandavas in the house of lac, he sent a coded warning to Yudhishthira. With words whose sense was that "when the forest burns, the rat in the tunnel escapes," he made him alert. Yudhishthira understood and escaped by a tunnel.

When Draupadi was insulted in the dice assembly, Vidura alone opposed it boldly. "This is not dharma. By this the clan will be destroyed," he thundered in the hall. His words were bitter to the king but true. Some saw him as an enemy. But he did not stop speaking the good.

Vidura gave his counsel to Dhritarashtra as sayings of ethics. They form the section called Vidura Niti in the Udyoga Parva. In it he speaks at length on dharma, patience, acting after examination and controlling anger. Even today they are read as a guide to life.

Had Dhritarashtra listened to them, the Kuru house would not have been destroyed. But the choice of minister was right; Vidura was one who preferred the good. Appointing him was a good selection. The tale shows that listening to such a person is also the leader's duty.

To reflect on

Among the people who work with you, who consistently chooses the good even when it is inconvenient, and do you listen to them?
