Explanation

This is the closing couplet of the chapter. It ends the call for fearlessness in the assembly with a stark comparison. 'Though they live, they are like those who are not' says that such people are like the non-existent although alive. The reason is that, in Valluvar's view, a person's life does not lie only in bodily breath but also in his knowledge being of use to others.

The word 'kalan' can mean the assembly, the battlefield and the arena of debate, all together. One who fears the field does not act. The thought that a life without action is without use runs throughout the Kural. So Valluvar says that one who has learned yet does not act is equal to the non-existent.

The comparison may sound harsh, but its aim is to encourage. If everyone who lives brings out his knowledge in the place meant for it, the comparison will not apply. The beginning and the end of the chapter together say that knowledge comes alive only when it climbs to the tongue and stands in the assembly. Commentators take 'equal to those who are not' as equal to the dead. Valluvar uses this comparison elsewhere too: he speaks of those without learning or without compassion as lifeless though alive. Here the same comparison applies to the one who has learned yet fears to speak. Its deeper thought is that knowledge gives a living life, and if it is not stated in the assembly it is dead knowledge to others.

A story

Vikarna in the Kaurava Hall

The dice game episode comes in the Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata. Yudhishthira lost his kingdom, his brothers and himself in the game. Then he staked Draupadi and lost her too. At Duryodhana's order she was dragged into the hall. The assembly was shaken.

Draupadi looked at the assembly and put a question of dharma: after losing himself, did Yudhishthira have the right to stake me? Elders such as Bhishma, Drona and Kripa sat there. They were learned and venerable. Yet they kept silent without giving a clear answer. The Mahabharata says that Bhishma hesitated, saying that the path of dharma is subtle.

Then Vikarna, one of the Kaurava brothers, rose. He was a younger son of Dhritarashtra and a brother of Duryodhana. 'Elders, it is not right that you remain silent. Answer her question,' he said. Since no one spoke, he gave his own view: Yudhishthira, having lost himself, had no right to stake her; therefore she had not been won.

Karna rebuked him angrily: 'You are young, and your speech is meaningless.' Vikarna did not retreat from his position. Though he stood alone in the hall, he spoke the truth. The Mahabharata goes on to narrate the events that followed in protecting Draupadi.

In this story, where learned elders stayed silent, a young man faced the hall without fear. In the Mahabharata tradition there are several explanations for Bhishma's silence, such as his being bound by obligation and the subtlety of dharma. We should not pass judgement on them. But Vikarna shows the loss in not speaking despite learning, and the worth of speaking without fear.

To reflect on

Was there a time you stayed silent where truth needed speaking? What will you do next time?
