Explanation

This couplet is the central one of the chapter. The world honours giving one's life on the battlefield as the greatest courage, and Valluvar does not belittle it. But in his view fearlessness in the assembly is a rarer courage. In war courage is born of the crowd's momentum and the war cries; in the assembly courage stands alone and puts both knowledge and honour to the test.

Notice the opposition of 'easy to find' and 'rare'. Men ready to die with sword in hand number many in a country. But very few can stand in a hall full of scholars, among counter-questions and scornful looks, and calmly state their view. This shows that fear for one's honour is stronger than fear for one's body.

Valluvar's message is twofold. First, fearlessness in the assembly must be honoured as a great kind of valour. Second, that valour does not come naturally; it is gained by practice and knowledge. The examination hall, the interview, the court of law and the legislature all call for this courage. Valluvar's claim has another dimension. On the battlefield the soldier is not alone: there are fellow soldiers, a commander, and a clear duty. For one speaking in the hall none of these helps. Only his knowledge, his word and his stand are with him, so the courage needed must come from the depth of the mind.

A story

Krishna's Embassy to Hastinapura

The Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata describes Krishna's peace embassy at length. Yudhishthira wished to avert war, and Krishna went to Hastinapura as the Pandavas' envoy. It was the seat of the Kaurava rule, and he knew he was going into the midst of enemies. Before he left, Draupadi tearfully reminded him of her sorrow, and Krishna gave her his assurance.

In the hall sat Dhritarashtra, Bhishma, Drona, Vidura and other elders. Duryodhana, Karna and Shakuni were also present. Krishna rose quietly. He said clearly: 'The Pandavas do not want war; they ask only for five villages.' He underlined that his embassy was to save the clan from ruin.

Duryodhana spoke harshly: 'I will not give even land the size of a needle's point.' Many in the hall stayed silent. Bhishma, Drona and Vidura warned Duryodhana. Krishna, without fear or anger, spoke of dharma again. When Duryodhana plotted to bind him, Krishna is said to have smiled and shown his cosmic form in the midst of the hall. Those present were shaken.

The embassy failed, but the words Krishna spoke stayed in the hall clearly. Standing alone among enemies, he delivered his message without the slightest slackening. This episode shows together fearlessness among enemies and fearlessness in the assembly. Krishna stood alone in the enemy's hall. His words did their duty even though they were not accepted.
