Explanation

The previous couplet spoke of hunger, disease and outside enemies; this one speaks of ruin that arises from within. Three evils are named: many factions opposing one another, internal enmity within the state, and murderous bandits who frighten the king.

Old commentaries explain 'palkuzhuvum' differently. Some say it means many parties hostile to each other. Others say it means groups that conspire together. Either way, they break the unity of the land.

'Utpakai', enmity from within, is the most dangerous. An outside enemy can be faced because he comes openly. The inside enemy destroys from within like a friend. Elsewhere in the Kural internal enmity is a chapter by itself. 'Kurumbu' here means a band that robs and kills from the border or from within.

So a land's strength is not only in armies but in the unity, trust and rule of law among its people. If these are broken, the land will destroy itself without needing an outside enemy.

Even in Sangam literature bands of marauders living on the borders and plundering are mentioned. Putting them down is the state's first duty. Similarly, internal enmity is a disease that seeps deep into society. To guard a land's unity, justice, equality and dialogue are needed. Without them even a small quarrel can grow into a great ruin, and the land that listens early to every grievance is the one that avoids the fire.

A story

The Fall of Dvaraka

The Mausala Parva of the Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana tell of the end of Dvaraka. In Krishna's time Dvaraka was a city full of wealth and beauty, and the Yadava clan was strong and renowned. But many years after the Kurukshetra war an evil time came upon them.

The story goes that one day some Yadava youths mocked sages. They showed them the young Samba dressed as a pregnant woman and asked what child would be born. The angry sages cursed that an iron pestle would be born that would destroy the Yadava clan. This tale comes from the Mahabharata tradition.

They ground the pestle to powder and threw it into the sea, and it grew as reeds on the shore. Later the Yadavas gathered at Prabhasa and drank. In their drunkenness old enmities arose. Satyaki and Kritavarma quarrelled. Splitting into factions, they plucked the reeds and struck each other, and the reeds turned into iron clubs, the Mahabharata says.

Thus the Yadava clan destroyed itself. Krishna did not prevent it; he accepted it as fate. Later, the Purana says, the sea swallowed Dvaraka. The traditions speak of curse and destiny; at the same time it is true that the clan's internal enmity hastened that ruin.

This story shows how a strong land can be destroyed by factional strife without any outside enemy. It is the negative witness to the couplet 'a land is one without warring factions and ruinous internal enmity'.
