Explanation

This couplet measures the quality of lands in two states. The first is a land that has never known ruin. The second is a land whose wealth does not diminish even after ruin has come. Of the two, the second is rarer. A land that has not met ruin is in good condition; a land that keeps its wealth after ruin has a strong foundation.

'Kettaidathum' also points to times when war, famine or flood has wrecked a land. If that land's wealth continues even then, the fertility of its soil, the labour of its people and the protection of its water bodies must be the reason. Prosperity is not a one-time treasure but the power to give again.

Commentators explain 'the head of lands' as the best land. The head is the chief limb of the body; likewise this land stands at the forefront of all lands.

Even today some towns and countries recover quickly from natural disasters. The reasons are foresight, community unity and care of the land. The couplet reminds us that prosperity is not only wealth but also the power to recover.

The power to recover does not come suddenly. It results from storing grain in good times, desilting water bodies and building trust among people. If one tries to do these after ruin arrives, it will be too late. So the phrase 'even in ruin' also serves as counsel for foresight.

A story

The Kingdom Restored After the War

After the Mahabharata war the Kuru land suffered immense loss. Countless warriors had died, families were destroyed, and the earth was soaked in blood. Though victorious, Yudhishthira was sunk in grief. The Shanti Parva describes his state of mind at length.

Bhishma, Krishna and Vyasa explained the king's duty to Yudhishthira. They said it was not dharma to stay in grief and abandon the land; the king's duty was to re-establish it. Yudhishthira slowly took up the rule and helped women who had lost husbands and children who had lost parents.

In his counsel Bhishma told what must be done for a land to be safe and prosperous: give farmers seed and cattle, protect merchants, maintain water bodies, and honour scholars. Yudhishthira followed these.

The Ashvamedhika Parva later says the land flourished under Yudhishthira's rule. According to the Mahabharata he ruled righteously for a long time. A land felled by war rose again. The soil gave back its fertility, and people recovered from sorrow.

Here the wealth not diminishing 'even in ruin' was not a miracle that happened by itself but a recovery made of counsel and effort. The story teaches us that a land of unfailing wealth is not one that never meets ruin, but one with the power to stand up again after it. Foresight made recovery possible.
