Explanation

Here Valluvar counts five ornaments of a land. An ornament gives beauty, and these give a land strength as well as beauty. The first is freedom from disease, people being healthy. Without health, neither wealth nor happiness is of use.

The second is wealth, material prosperity. The third is produce, the yield of agriculture and trades. The fourth is happiness, the joy of the people. The fifth is security, protection. Of these, wealth and produce depend on material things, freedom from disease and security depend on protection, and happiness depends on the mind. So the five embrace body, material and mind together.

Commentators show slight variations in the order. Some combine wealth and produce and place peace alongside security. Yet the number five and the meaning are the same.

Today development of a country is measured by indicators of health, economy, production, happiness and security. This is the modern form of Valluvar's five ornaments.

The word 'ani' signifies not only beauty but a distinction that adds worth. As a woman wears jewels, a land shines when it wears these five. If even one is lacking, the land looks less beautiful. So state and people should nurture all five together, because neglecting one eventually dims the others.

A story

A Village Counts Its Ornaments

This is an imagined tale. In a village on the Kaveri bank the village assembly meets every year on Thai Pongal. That year the village headman, the elder Sokkalingam, wished to speak of the state of his village. He knew the Kural well.

Rising in the assembly he said, 'Today let us count our village's five ornaments. The first is freedom from disease. This year when fever came, our village midwife-healer went from house to house helping. So no great sickness spread.' The assembly thanked the healer.

'The second is wealth. A common fund has gathered for the village through shared labour on the temple land. The third is produce. As the Kaveri water did not fall short this year, the paddy grew well.' The farmers rejoiced.

'The fourth is happiness. This year our children did well in school, and our youth conducted the temple festival well. The fifth is security. There is no theft in the village, and the watchmen go about the streets at night.' The people clapped on hearing this.

Then Sokkalingam said, 'There are lacks in each ornament too. The embankment of the tank is weak, and the healer needs an assistant.' The villagers each took up tasks, and they repaired the tank bund.

A land is not only a great state; a small village is its shadow. By counting the five ornaments each year, that village put Valluvar's words into practice.
