Renown

Pukazh

This chapter teaches that the good name earned by giving and by honourable living is the only true profit a soul can carry away from this world. Valluvar concludes that to live with fame is to truly live, while to live under blame is a kind of death.

Introduction

The chapter on renown closes the section on domestic virtue in the Book of Virtue. A householder has already learned hospitality, kindness and giving; this chapter asks what such a life leaves behind. Valluvar's answer is pukazh, a good name. Because it follows the chapter on giving, the first two couplets at once tie the two together: those who give are the ones about whom people speak, and what is spoken of them is what remains.

The renown meant here is not publicity. It is the state in which others, without being asked, remember and repeat the good a person has done. That is why the second couplet says that all who speak, speak of those who give to the needy. Fame chased after rarely lasts; fame that arrives of its own accord, as the fruit of a way of living, stays. The tradition calls this lasting remainder isai or echcham, what is left standing when a person has gone.

The ten couplets rise step by step. The first three describe what renown is and how long it endures. The fourth shows the esteem the world, and even the heavens, give to it. The fifth says that loss and even death, when borne for the sake of a good name, are themselves glorious. The sixth makes a plea: if you must be born, be born with fame. The seventh scolds those who, having earned no name, rage at their critics instead of looking at themselves. The eighth and ninth show the cost of a life without a spotless name, first to the individual and then to the land that carries such people. The tenth gathers everything into two lines that define who truly lives and who does not.

Notice how often the word vasai, blame, returns. It is the opposite face of renown. Valluvar shows that fame has two sides: doing good, and living so that no fault can be pinned on you. One who longs for a good name must first guard against disgrace.

Today the counted 'likes' of social media can look like renown, but they vanish by tomorrow. What Valluvar means is the esteem that lives in people's hearts, the good memory a family or a village keeps of someone. The chapter gives us a pause to ask what we shall leave behind us.

Chapter story

Karna's Armour and Earrings

This episode is from the Mahabharata. Karna, king of Anga, was known throughout the world for his generosity. After his morning worship of the Sun, he never refused anything that anyone asked of him. No beggar who came in that hour went away empty-handed, and the fame of this habit reached even the heavens.

Karna had been born wearing a natural armour and a pair of earrings, which made him invincible in battle. Indra, king of the gods, knowing this and wishing to protect his own son Arjuna, came to Karna disguised as a brahmin. The Sun God appeared to Karna in a dream and warned him, but Karna would not give up his vow. 'If I refuse what a seeker asks,' he thought, 'my name and my dharma will both be lost.'

The brahmin asked for the armour and earrings. Karna smiled, cut them from his own body, and placed them in the visitor's hand while blood flowed. There was no trace of pain on his face. Indra himself was astonished, revealed who he was, and granted Karna a boon: a powerful weapon that could strike an enemy once without missing.

It is well known that Karna was weaker in battle for that loss. Yet those who tell the Mahabharata today remember not the armour he lost but the heart he showed. Even his enemies came to say that in giving there was no one to equal Karna.

A question rises from the tale: why does the world regard as unconquered the man who gave away what was as dear as life? Because the body perishes, but the act of giving stays in memory. Valluvar says the same: a life of giving joined with good name is the true profit of the soul. The epic does not hide Karna's faults or his unfortunate friendships, yet it is for his generosity alone that he is remembered with reverence.

Karna did not give for the sake of fame. Giving was his nature, and fame followed behind it. He did not look at the face of the petitioner before deciding; whoever asked, he gave. That is why even the gods came to him with trust. In many a street we have seen a smaller version of this: an elder at whose door the hungry were always fed. He was not rich, but nobody who climbed his steps went away hungry, and after he was gone no one in the lane failed to speak of him.

When village grandmothers tell this story to children they add a gentle note: not everyone need be a Karna, but if each person gives a small gift every day according to their means, that too is a small renown.

Key lessons

  • Giving is the foundation of renown, and renown is the true profit of a soul.
  • Fame is not to be hunted; it follows a life of goodness.
  • When everything else perishes, a good name remains.
  • Blaming critics is useless without first looking at one's own faults; live so that no blame can attach.
  • One who lives with a good name truly lives; a life without it is a living death.
