Power of Speech

சொல்வன்மை · Solvanmai

சொல்வன்மை அதிகாரம், நாவின் நலமே தனிப்பெரும் நலம் என்றும், இடம் அறிந்து சுருக்கமாகவும் இனிமையாகவும் பேசும் ஆற்றல் அறத்தையும் பொருளையும் தரும் என்றும் கூறுகிறது.

This chapter teaches that the grace of the tongue is a unique blessing, and that speech that is apt, brief and sweet brings both dharma and prosperity.

Introduction

The name of this chapter in the Arasiyal section of the Porutpaal is Solvanmai. 'Vanmai' is strength or skill. The chapter speaks of the power of speech and the skill to use it. The previous chapter gave the qualifications of the minister; the minister's greatest tool is his tongue. So it is natural that this chapter follows. A country's peace or war and a home's joy or sorrow are decided by words.

The first verse honours 'naanalam', the grace of the tongue, as a unique blessing different from all other blessings. The second says that since prosperity and ruin both come from speech, there must be no lapse in speaking. The third says that only speech that binds the listeners can be called speech. The fourth and fifth speak of the value of speaking aptly and unanswerably. The sixth praises the dignity of delighting listeners while also taking the value of others' words.

The seventh says that one with eloquence, steadiness and fearlessness is hard to defeat. The eighth says that the world quickly lends its ear to those who speak sweetly and in order. The ninth points out that those who long to say many things lack the skill to say a few clear words. The tenth compares those who cannot explain what they have learnt to a flower without fragrance.

In today's world speech is more abundant than ever. In social media, meetings and families words flow like a flood. How many of them give clarity and sweetness is the question. This chapter of Valluvar gives us the lesson of when, how much and how to speak.

There is a subtlety in this chapter following the chapter on ministers. However wise a minister may be, if he cannot say his knowledge in a way the king and people understand, it is useless. So the last step of learning, examination and counsel is eloquence. Both writing and speaking come under it. The world honours one who has so refined his word.

Valluvar here does not only praise the power of speech; he also warns of its danger. Because one word may bring prosperity or ruin, he says there should be no lapse in speech. He also lists in order brief speech, apt speech, unanswerable speech, sweet speech, fearless speech, and humility in listening and learning. Only when all these combine does eloquence become complete.

In our tradition speech has special honour. We worship Saraswati as Vagdevi. There is the belief that speech is divine. The inner idea of the chapter is that such speech should be used purely and usefully.

Chapter story

The Thevaram of Thirugnanasambandar

In the Periya Puranam, the Thirugnanasambandar Puranam stands as a fine example of the power of the word. A child born to Sivapada Hridayar and Bhagavathi Ammaiyar at Sirkazhi, at three years old cried on the temple tank bank not finding his father. Then, the Purana says, Goddess Uma fed him the milk of wisdom, and the child sang the first decad beginning 'Thodudaiya seviyan'. In those words devotion, music and meaning were mingled as one.

Sambandar went from shrine to shrine singing decads. Those who heard his songs melted in heart. At Thirukkolakka, when he sang clapping his hands, the story says the Lord gave a golden cymbal so that his hands would not hurt. His songs had the power to bind listeners by sweetness. Those who heard his words kept them in their hearts.

In Madurai the Pandya king Koon Pandyan was under the influence of the Jains. His queen Mangayarkkarasiyar and minister Kulachchiraiyar were Shiva devotees. They invited Sambandar to Madurai. When the king suffered a burning fever the Jains could not cure him. Sambandar sang the decad beginning 'Mandhiramaavadhu neeru' and applied sacred ash; the fever eased, the Purana says.

Then a debate with the Jains followed. Tradition says that in both the ordeal by fire and the ordeal by water, Sambandar's Thevaram songs won. After this the Pandya king embraced Shaivism. A state arose in which Sambandar's word had no counter-word. He won not by mere argument but by words mixed with love and grace.

Later, the Purana says, on the day of his wedding at Nallur Perumanam he merged with the Lord in a form of light. His decads are still chanted in temples. The grace of speech made his sixteen-year life last many centuries.

There is another event in Sambandar's life. At Thirumaraikadu the doors of the temple, once worshipped by the Vedas, stood closed. The Purana says that Appar earlier opened them by singing a decad, and later Sambandar sang a decad to close them. Tradition says both opened and closed the doors by word alone. It is a symbol of the spiritual power of the Tamil word.

Even today Sambandar's first decad 'Thodudaiya seviyan' is chanted in temples. For many centuries it has been taught with equal love to children and elders. Sambandar lived out the excellence of musical Tamil. His 'Yazhmuri' decad has a difficult musical structure; it is said the yazh player Thirunilakanta Yazhppanar marvelled when he heard it.

How did it come that though Sambandar was a child, even elders bowed to him? There was light not only in his word but in his humility and love. In his songs he did not sing his own praise; he sang the Lord. So his word was free of pride and sweet. This is the true secret of eloquence: the strength of a word comes from the purity of the speaker.

Sambandar's life is the full form of 'naanalam ennum nalanudaimai'. His tongue gave grace through sweetness, knowledge through clarity and victory through firmness. So we can see him as the living picture of the chapter on the power of speech.
