Meaning

'There is nothing to say': losing everything, I was let into the realm of simply being still. Was it not the warrior Lord of the vel who let me in? It was the power of the great one with mountain-like shoulders, who embraces Valli, sweet of speech, whose red lips are like the kovvai fruit of the hills!

Explanation

'Summa irukkum ellai', the realm of being still, is pictured as a territory one must 'enter'. Yet effort alone cannot get one in; Murugan must 'let' one in. The verse joins two faces of the Lord: the warrior with the vel and the lover who embraces Valli. It is that power, valour and tenderness together, that opens the door to stillness.

Life of Sadasiva Brahmendra

The Silent Sage Who Did Not Notice His Arm

From the tradition of Sadasiva Brahmendra. In the eighteenth century, on the banks of the Kaveri, Sadasiva Brahmendra took a vow of silence at his guru's word. He wandered unclothed, absorbed, forgetting the world. One day he unknowingly walked into a king's private quarters, and the furious king cut off his arm with a sword. The sage did not even stop or look; he simply walked on. Terrified, the king ran after him and fell at his feet; tradition says the sage touched the arm and it was whole again. That was the state of one who had entered 'the realm of being still'.
