Explanation

Commentators give two senses to this verse. One is that one may, if need be, speak harshly and mercilessly to a man's face, but one must never speak about him behind his back without thinking of the consequence. It compares the evil of backbiting with direct harshness. In direct harshness, the person facing you at least has a chance to answer. In backbiting that chance does not exist.

'Kannindru kannara sollal' is to stand face to face and speak mercilessly. Valluvar does not say that is good. But compared with backbiting, even that is acceptable, he says. For when said directly, the accused can explain, correct himself or refute. It may become a conversation.

There is a further sense in 'munnindru pin nokkaa sol'. It is to speak one way when in front of him and, without thinking what happens later, to speak otherwise behind him. The idea is that before we speak, we should consider the aftermath.

In practice, if we learn of someone's fault, it is better to tell him directly, kindly and in private than to tell a third person. He may then correct himself, and our relationship is preserved. Backbiting does good to no one. Courage and love are both needed to speak a fault to someone's face; the backbiter has neither.

A story

Rama's Restraint

This is a scene from the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. After Rama went to the forest, Bharata came to the wilderness with the armies of Ayodhya to see his elder brother. Hearing of his approach, Guha and Lakshmana suspected that he came to fight. Lakshmana said angrily, "Kaikeyi's son is not content with a kingdom; he comes to destroy Rama too."

Rama stopped Lakshmana. "Bharata is my brother; do not speak of him thus. He is coming out of love. What you say is not dharma." The slander against Bharata, spoken in his absence, Rama halted on the spot.

When Bharata met Rama at Chitrakuta, he wept and grieved over his mother's act. "By my mother's fault you went to the forest. The kingdom is yours. Return to Ayodhya," he said. He spoke harshly about his mother Kaikeyi.

Rama did not utter a word of reproach about Kaikeyi. Instead he said, "Do not blame Mother Kaikeyi. It is my duty to keep my father's word. I am bound by his command." He never showed hatred for the mother who sent him to the forest. The tradition says that when, after many years, he returned to Ayodhya, he first bowed at Kaikeyi's feet.

Even of the one who had done him the greatest wrong, Rama spoke no blame in her absence. No 'word said in front without a thought for what lies behind' ever came from his mouth. This is what made him the ideal man.

Have I held my tongue about someone in their absence even when they have hurt me?
