Explanation

'Thunniyaar' means those who have mingled closely, such as friends and relatives. Valluvar asks: one who delights in spreading even their faults abroad, what will he not speak of 'edhilaar', strangers? It is a warning in the form of a question. The inner meaning is not to trust such a man with anything.

To close friends a man tells his secrets, his weaknesses and his mistakes. To use that trust and spread them to others is the height of betrayal. It is natural to conclude that one who has violated the sacred bond of friendship will show no respect to strangers.

The word 'marabinaar' is important. It means they are habituated to speaking so. They are not those who spoke wrongly once; they habitually spread others' faults. One must be careful with them.

This gives us two lessons. First, before trusting someone, we should observe how he speaks of his friends. Second, we ourselves should be people who conceal the faults of our friends. The habit of concealing a close one's fault is a mark of good conduct. In today's social media, sharing screenshots of private conversations is a new form of the same betrayal. Friendship is a sacred trust, and one who guards it also guards himself. Whoever tells you a friend's secret will one day tell yours. So the safest companion is the one who is silent about others' lapses in your presence.

A story

Karna and Shalya

This is the dialogue between Karna and Shalya told in the Karna Parva of the Mahabharata. On the seventeenth day of the Kurukshetra war, Duryodhana appointed Karna commander. As Karna prepared to fight Arjuna, he asked that Shalya, king of Madra, drive his chariot. Shalya was the maternal uncle of the Pandavas, but by Duryodhana's cunning he had come to fight on the Kaurava side. Shalya had no wish to be a charioteer. But he agreed at Duryodhana's request.

As soon as the chariot set out, Shalya began to belittle Karna. "Son of a charioteer, do you think of fighting Arjuna? It is like a jackal fighting a lion," he mocked. In turn Karna spoke harshly of the character of the Madra people and of Shalya himself. Each began to list the other's faults and abuse him.

They ought to have begun the battle as allies. But before the fight each reviled the other and stirred up anger. The argument was loud enough to be heard on the battlefield. The warriors there marvelled: if a man will proclaim his friend's faults before others, what will he do to strangers?

When Karna was fighting Arjuna, his chariot wheel sank into the mud. As he got down and tried to lift it, Shalya refused to help. With a close friendship he would have helped. The bitterness caused by their wrangling turned into non-help in his hour of distress. Afterward Karna fell.

This event is a picture of how, when comrades spread each other's faults, their unity and strength fall apart. Those who have the habit of denouncing even the faults of intimates will spare no one.
