Explanation

'Aran azheei allavai seydhal' means abandoning dharma and doing wrongs. We know that is a great fault. Valluvar says that worse than that is 'puran azheei poydhu nagai': slandering a man behind his back and smiling falsely when he comes in front. This verse condemns deceit together with backbiting.

Why is this worse than an openly wrong deed? A man who does evil openly can be recognised and guarded against. But we go close to the one who smiles in friendship in front and stabs behind, trusting him. He makes our own trust his weapon. Betrayal of trust is a double fault: the slander is one, the false smile is the other.

A smile is the sign of friendship. To fake that sign poisons the very relationships of men. His mind thinks one thing, his face shows another and his mouth says a third. No relationship can last with such a man.

What we learn is that our words and actions should agree with our minds. If we do not like a person, we can politely keep away; but we must not praise before his face and revile behind it. That, in Valluvar's judgement, is worse than doing wrong. A culture of such double dealing makes everyone suspicious of everyone else.

A story

Shakuni's Smile

This is the story of Shakuni, king of Gandhara, told in the Adi Parva and Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata. Shakuni was the brother of Gandhari, wife of Dhritarashtra. Tales say that his sister's marriage to a blind king left him with a hidden resentment toward the family. He stayed on at Hastinapura. There he mingled very warmly with the elders of the Kuru house.

Before the Pandavas, Shakuni always appeared smiling. He spoke lovingly to Yudhishthira and joked with Bhima. But in private he said something else into the ear of his own nephew Duryodhana. "The Pandavas are a sore in the eye of our house; their fame is your loss." Daily he poured poison. A double role was his: a pleasant face before them, a venomous voice behind.

When Duryodhana burned with jealousy after the Rajasuya, Shakuni put forward his plan. "We cannot defeat them in war. But Yudhishthira has a weakness for dice, and in that we can win." The envoy who went with the invitation to the game also believed Shakuni's sweet words. Yudhishthira could not refuse the invitation and came.

In the gambling hall Shakuni spoke with humility and a smile, as if to say "I am your maternal uncle; would I harm you?" But his dice were crooked; the epic says the dice fell as he wished. Every throw took Yudhishthira's wealth, kingdom, brothers and Draupadi.

In the end, in the Kurukshetra war, Sahadeva defeated and killed Shakuni. His sweet mask and cunning words destroyed a whole dynasty. Many consider that more than those who openly opposed dharma, Shakuni, who smiled in front and sprinkled poison behind, did the greatest harm to the Kuru house.
