Explanation

The previous verse said even for the mother's hunger a blameworthy act is not allowed. This verse continues, saying honest poverty is higher than wealth obtained by blame. 'Pazhimalaindhu' is wearing blame on the head like a garland. That is, wealth with blame may seem to adorn one's honour but is in truth a burden. 'Kazhinalkuravu' is extreme poverty.

Here the poverty and wealth of the noble are compared. Poverty is painful even for the noble; but it does not wreck their conduct. Wealth by blame wrecks their conduct itself. So when both are compared, poverty is better. This is not praise of poverty; it is censure of wealth by blame.

Commentators give 'thalai' the sense of excellent, first. Some take the verse as the way of renunciation. But it applies also to householders. Householders who keep honesty even in poverty sleep more peacefully than those who gained wealth by blame.

Wealth is sweet in itself; but its source matters. If the source is impure, the wealth too becomes impure. It also disrupts the peace of mind of the family.

In today's life those who gather wealth through bribery or deceit may look comfortable outside but inwardly live in fear and guilt. One who earned a little by honest labour lives with contentment. The verse makes us feel the meaning of that choice.

A story

The Mongoose and the Poor Brahmin of Kurukshetra

The Ashvamedhika Parva of the Mahabharata tells a fine story. After the Kurukshetra war Yudhishthira performed the Ashvamedha sacrifice. Great gifts were given. After the sacrifice a mongoose came into the arena; half of its body was golden. It said with a laugh, 'This sacrifice does not equal a handful of flour given by a poor brahmin who lived in Kurukshetra.'

Everyone was amazed. The mongoose told the story: In Kurukshetra lived a poor brahmin who lived by gleaning grain. He picked up the grains that fell in the fields after harvest and ate them. He, his wife, son and daughter-in-law, all four, went hungry many days in a severe famine. One day with great effort a little flour was obtained. As they were about to cook and eat it, a guest arrived.

The brahmin gave his share of flour to the guest. As the guest's hunger was not satisfied, the brahmin's wife gave her share. Then the son gave his share. Then the daughter-in-law gave hers. All of them remained hungry and died, the story says. The guest was in truth Dharmadeva; he blessed them gladly and sent them to heaven.

When the mongoose rolled in the flour spilled there, half its body became golden. To make the other half golden too, it went to many sacrifices and rolled. It changed nowhere. Not even at Yudhishthira's great sacrifice.

This tale shows the glory of honest poverty. That brahmin's family had no wealth; but even in hunger they gave no room to blame. Their handful of flour is greater than the heaped gifts of a great sacrifice, the story says. It is a fine witness of 'pazhimalaindhu eydhiya aakkaththin saandror kazhinal kuravae thalai'.
