Explanation

This verse speaks of the firmness of friendship that has arisen from love. Some make friends for goods or advantage, some for reputation, some by habit. But those Valluvar calls 'anbin vazhivandha kenmaiyavar' have love as their root. Even if a friend does something that ruins them, they do not cut off love. 'Azhivandha' refers to acts that bring harm to oneself; 'anbarar' means those who do not fail in love.

A question may arise: how can one continue love toward one who has done harm? The commentators answer. Love is one thing, acceptance another. We need not accept the wrong the friend did; we may point it out and even oppose it. Familiarity means not severing love for him. Only when love remains do efforts to correct him go on. Without love, we do not care even if he falls.

We see this in families and friendships today. Those who struggle lovingly to bring back a friend fallen into drink, and those who stand beside a relative who made a wrong decision, are of this kind. Their love is unconditional, and that is what protects relationships.

Notice, too, that the phrase is about the origin of the friendship: the 'path of love'. A friendship that began as a business arrangement will end when the business sours. A friendship that began as love and grew through years has deep roots and may bend in a storm without breaking.

A story

Rama's Patience

In the Kishkindha Kanda, after Sugriva became king, a problem arose. Having defeated Vali and gained his kingdom, Sugriva sank into the pleasures of royalty. He had earlier promised that the search for Sita would begin as soon as the rains ended. The rains ended, but Sugriva did nothing. Rama waited on the hill in grief.

Rama said to Lakshmana, "Brother, it seems Sugriva has forgotten his promise. Go and speak to him. But do not speak harshly; he is our friend." Lakshmana arrived at Kishkindha in anger. Seeing him come with his bow strung, the vanaras were terrified.

When Lakshmana entered Sugriva's court, Angada received him lovingly. Tara came smiling and said, "Prince, give up your anger; Sugriva has realised his fault." Lakshmana's wrath slowly melted. The scene shows that the language of love can lower any bow.

What Sugriva had done was a thing that caused Rama great hurt: the search for Sita was delayed. Each day was agony for Rama. This is like what Valluvar calls 'doing ruinous things'. But Rama did not sever his love. He did not dare to destroy Sugriva. He also restrained Lakshmana from harshness.

Sugriva became afraid, realised his fault and apologised to Lakshmana with sorrow. Tara, Hanuman and others spoke for him. At once he sent messengers in the four directions. Rama accepted his friend's regret; the old love was not diminished.

The scene shows that a friendship born of love is not broken by a single lapse. Rama might have been angry with Sugriva, but he did not cut off love. That is why the finding of Sita and the war of Lanka became possible in the end.

To reflect on

When a friend let you down, did you keep the love while correcting the wrong?
