Explanation

This verse puts forward the gain from removing ikal. 'Evvam' is that which gives sorrow; 'ikal ennum evva noi' is the sorrow-giving disease called ikal. If it is removed, 'thaval illaath thaavil vilakkam', a radiance without decline and without flaw will come, says Valluvar. 'Vilakkam' means light like a lamp's and also fame.

The subtlety of the verse lies in the word 'thaavil'. 'Thaa' is fault; 'thaavil' is faultless. So the fame of one who has conquered ikal is faultless; that is, it is not fame got by lowering others, but a fame that shines of itself. Fame won in battle will have pained some, but fame won by conquering ikal grieves no one.

Further 'thaval illaa' denotes that which does not decline or perish. Wealth and post may diminish with time, but a good name won through peace of mind stands beyond time. Those who are honoured in history are mostly not those who won wars, but those who conquered hostility and established peace.

Even today, the distinction of successful leaders, teachers and parents lies in their ability to remain harmonious with everyone without nursing bitterness. All respect them, and their memory does not fade.

So removing ikal is not a sacrifice but an investment. It gives us peace of mind, a good name and lasting relationships.

A story

The Chariot Rope and the Village Elder

In a large temple village the Masi Magam chariot festival was held every year. For many generations two families had quarrelled over the right to pull the chariot. One family said 'We shall hold the first rope', the other said 'It is our ancestors' right'. Every year the festival began with a fight and ended in bitterness.

In that village an old man named Sankaran was the head of one family. In youth he had been in the front of these fights. But as age advanced, he realised the harm this ikal had done to his family and the village. One year before the festival he went in person to the house of the head of the other side.

'Friend, both of us have grown old. What we leave our grandchildren is not the chariot rope but enmity. This year let your family hold the first rope. Ours will hold the second. For us unity is greater than right.'

The other leader first did not believe it. But seeing truth in Sankaran's eyes, he wept. He embraced Sankaran. That year the chariot rolled peacefully, pulled by both families together. All the villagers rejoiced.

Sankaran did not do this for any post or fame. Yet his fame spread across the village. After he passed away the village placed a memorial in the chariot hall in his name, a rope-shaped marker. They inscribed on it the verse 'ikalennum evvanoi neekkin thavalillaath thaavil vilakkam tharum'.

Even today in that village the two families hold the rope together at the chariot festival. The peace Sankaran sowed flourished across generations.

It is clear from this that the fame one gets by giving up one's claim and seeking peace shines longer than the fame won by establishing one's claim.

To reflect on

What claim, if you let it go, might bring more peace than winning it?
