Explanation

This verse further stresses the idea of the previous one. Ikal is the sorrow among sorrows; if it perishes, the joy among joys is obtained. The use of the two phrases 'inbaththul inbam' and 'thunbaththul thunbam' in opposition is beautiful. The idea is that ikal is not merely a sorrow but the chief of sorrows.

Why is ikal the sorrow of sorrows? Because other sorrows come from outside: illness, loss and poverty are beyond our control. Ikal, however, is a sorrow we ourselves nurture. It eats away our mind, sleep and peace every day. Even if we win in it, there is loss. So the freedom gained on removing it becomes a great joy.

The joy of joys is not luxury or sensory pleasure. It points to contentment of mind, nearness of relationships and a fearless ease. The lightness one feels when a long-standing quarrel ends is its proof. No wealth can buy it.

Many commentators expand this as joy in both this life and the next when ikal departs. But for today's life its simple meaning is enough: letting go of bitterness is medicine for the mind.

It helps to feel this verse if we think of a resentment we have carried for long, and imagine how much joy will come on the day we put it down.

A story

The Brothers of Deepavali

In a small village lived two brothers, Ramasamy and Krishnasamy. After their father passed away, a difference arose over dividing the family land, and for seven years the two did not speak. Though they lived on the same street, they passed by without looking at each other. Their mother saw this and grieved daily.

On the night before one Deepavali, Ramasamy's daughter writhed with fever. There was no help at home. A cart was needed to take her to the doctor at night. With no other way, Ramasamy knocked at his brother's door. Krishnasamy gave his cart without a question and went along himself.

After treatment at the hospital the child recovered. At dawn the two sat at the hospital gate. Ramasamy said softly, 'Brother, all these years I hated you. But today you came without asking a question.' Krishnasamy said, 'Brother, I too could not forget you. Now I see how large the land is; your daughter's life is larger than that.'

The two embraced with tears. That day was Deepavali. They returned home together. Their mother lit a lamp and welcomed them. The joy on her face was beyond words.

From that day they divided their land equally. No case was needed. Ramasamy said later that the burden carried for so many years melted in a moment. He told his children, 'I learnt that when the sorrow called ikal perishes, the joy of joys arrives.'

Since that day the village remembers that the light of Deepavali lies not just in lamps but in hearts from which bitterness has gone.
