Meaning

The young woman with garlanded tresses and her man with his bow set out together. The cruel desert path, the path that those who do not praise Maran must walk, they cross within a single day. Then they come into the rich farmland, where the parrots in the lovely golden halls stay awake, startled by the droning of the sugar-cane presses. They will reach that holy land, the land of the Alvar.

Explanation

This is a scene in the manner of old Tamil love poems. Of the five landscapes, the desert, paalai, is harsh and the farmland, marutham, is rich. The lovers crossing the desert to reach the farmland is a passage from hardship to joy.

Kambar adds a subtle touch: that desert is the road walked by those who do not praise Maran. For those who honour the Alvar, the road of life grows short and sweet. Where they arrive is the land of Kurugur, so rich and busy that even the parrots cannot sleep.

Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda

Sita's Questions on the Forest Road

From the Valmiki Ramayana. When Rama set out for the forest to keep his father's word, Sita came with him, saying, 'Wherever you are is Ayodhya for me.' She had grown up in a palace and had never walked a path of stones and thorns.

Crossing the Ganga, then the Yamuna, they walked towards Chitrakuta: Rama with his bow in front, Sita in the middle, Lakshmana behind. Along the way she pointed to every tree and every flowering creeper she had never seen before and asked Rama, 'What is this?' Rama told her the name of each, and Lakshmana gathered the flowers she liked and gave them to her.

The hard forest road, walked with a loving companion, became a sweet journey. That is what Kambar says in this verse: with good company and a good thought in the heart, even the desert grows short.

Has a hard journey or a hard time ever become easier because of good company?
