Meaning

Thirumal churned the ocean and gave the nectar to the gods; he bears the cool conch whose sound churns the very guts of his foes. In the same way, Nammalvar churned the unfailing Veda and gave us the honey called the Thiruvaimozhi. He is the master who cut away my painful birth and took even me as his own.

Explanation

God churned the ocean and gave nectar; the Alvar churned the Veda and gave the honey of the Thiruvaimozhi. The pairing is beautiful. The nectar God gave reached only the gods. But the honey the Alvar gave reaches everyone, enough to take 'even me'.

The nectar gave the gods freedom from death. The Thiruvaimozhi gives freedom from birth. That is the meaning of 'cutting away painful birth'.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 8; Vishnu Purana

The Churning of the Ocean of Milk

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. Through the curse of the sage Durvasa, the gods lost their strength. Defeated by the asuras, they went to Thirumal. 'Churn the Ocean of Milk and you will get the nectar,' he said. 'Churn it together with the asuras.'

With Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope, the gods and asuras churned the ocean. When the mountain began to sink, Thirumal became a tortoise and bore it on his back. First the deadly poison Halahala rose; Lord Shiva drank it and saved the world. Then many treasures appeared: the wish-cow Kamadhenu, the elephant Airavata, the Kaustubha gem, and Sri, the goddess of fortune, who chose Thirumal himself. At last Dhanvantari rose holding the pot of nectar.

The asuras snatched the nectar. Then Thirumal came as Mohini, a beautiful woman, and shared the nectar among the gods alone. Only at the end of long labour did the nectar come. Kambar says the Alvar too churned the depths of the ocean of the Veda to bring up the honey of the Thiruvaimozhi.
