Meaning

Even if the gods call out, 'Come, ascend to heaven'; even if I were granted liberation itself by Krishna, who tamed the bulls in the lovely cattle-pen; I do not want them. To drink the sweet honey that the Thiruvaimozhi of the wise one of beautiful Kurugur gives each day, and to wander about drunk on it: that is the attainment that will come to me.

Explanation

Kambar says: I want neither heaven nor liberation; tasting the Thiruvaimozhi is enough. This is not exaggeration but a deep idea of Vaishnava tradition. Enjoying God is the highest gain, and in the Thiruvaimozhi that enjoyment is found here in this world.

The Alvars often voice the feeling, 'Leaving this taste, I would not want even the taste of ruling Indra's heaven.' Kambar turns the same feeling towards the Alvar's own songs.

Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara Kanda

Hanuman Stays to Hear Rama's Story

From the Valmiki Ramayana. The time came for Rama to complete his avatar and return to Vaikuntha. Many of the people of Ayodhya went with him to the Sarayu river and reached the heavenly world.

But Hanuman asked Rama for a boon: 'Let me live in this world as long as your story is told here. Hearing your story is enough for me.' Rama, pleased, granted it: 'You will live as long as my story is told in the world.'

That is why, even today, wherever the Ramayana is recited, a seat is set aside for Hanuman. It is believed that he sits there listening, hands joined and eyes full of tears. Hanuman held tasting the story of God greater than liberation itself. That is what Kambar wishes for in this verse.
